FIRST NIGHT” QUESTIONS WITH YOUR HOST FAMILY
"What do I call you?" Questions like this one are asked usually on the first or second night with the whole family in attendance.
It the best time to set things straight from the very beginning. They may seem like basic even stupid questions but misunderstandings start with less. The only stupid question is the one that never gets asked. That is particularly true in Youth Exchange.
These questions are designed to cover the very basic issues you should know about from the very beginning. You will have more of your own on the third and fourth days and will probably have them until you go home. It is probably a good idea to write down the answers. There is no sense asking the questions if you don't remembr the answers.
Make sure you ask these questions with you second and third host families too. Hopefully by then you won't need these translations.
These questions are suggestions only. You and your host family should discuss anything that you think is important. We suggest you discuss the items most important to you as soon as possible. When you are in a new place with not much language skill, it is best not to assume anything, but rather, to ask. The simplest questions may be the most important, such as “where is the bathroom”? You can come back to other questions as they seem necessary
Here are word files for the some of the basic languages. Others can be found on a Youth Exchange resource website called YEO resources. There is a link below to this site if you don't see the language you need.
